Clipboard Magic -- clipboard extender
Clipboard Magic is one utility I could not live without. I am totally dependent on it.
What it does is saves a history of everything you copy into your Windows clipboard. So, you copy something to the clip board, then copy something else. Oh, wait, I need to paste the first one in somewhere. No problem, just click the Clipboard Magic icon in the system tray and you have a list of all items you have copied (the number saved is configurable).
It is totally awsome. I use it every day. And it it 100% freeware.
Click here to get it now.

OpenOffice.org -- Very cool...sorta
I am going to start off with OpenOffice, org, not because I am in love with it, but because I just spent a day using it.
OpenOffice.org is an open source replacement for MicroSoft Office suite. The current version is version 2.0. The components include Writer -- a full featured word processor replacement for MS Word, Calc -- a powerful spreadsheet that replaces MS Excel, Impress -- a MS PowerPoint multimedia editor replacement, Base -- a database management system similar to MS Access and Math -- a mathematical equation editor.
From my experience, they all work fairly well and each can open up files that correspond to their MS equivalents. i.e. Writer can open Word files and Impress can open PowerPoint files -- and edit them.
As I mentioned, I just experienced using Writer for creating an outline. I was able to make it work, but must admit it was fairly buggy. I had to monkey-fiddle with it quite a bit to make it all work, as far as sequential outline numbering and formatting. But, in the end, was able to do what I needed to do.
However, it must be noted that when I got home from the office, I tried to use MS Word to do the same thing, and it was not real intuitive either. It seemed to be less buggy, but I would have had to spend a fair amount of time learning how to use it, just like I did with Writer.
So, in the end, if you want a free, yet powerful, office suite, OpenOffice.org is a great product. You can download it by clicking here to go to the website.

In the beginning...
My Opening Statement:
The web is cool!
The other day I wanted to know who invented nitroglycerin. It was like 2:00 am. Within minutes I knew all about the history of nitroglycerin.
I get very uncomfortable when cut off from the web. The world of information must be at my fingertips at all times. It is like being plugged in to the universe. Without leaving your comfy chair.
I have started a number of Internet businesses. These include an affiliate tracking system called FusionQuest and a membership management system called MembershipPlugin.
In my extensive Information Super Highway travels, I have come across many very cool things and resources that I use all the time. This blog is going to be a list of cool things I have found. Most of them will be free.
Don't know how often I will publish this. Whenever the mood strikes me.
I am interested in feedback as well and suggestions of cool stuff you have found. I am a big open source fan, which is fundamentally a collaboration of minds (yes, Darl, it is more than just free software, it is a philosophy). This will be an open source platform for cool stuff on the web, moderated by me. (In other words, I have to think it is cool as well.)
I can be reached at jb3@jbmckee.com.
So, stay tuned and be amazed!
